This was a very intriguing book. I would definitely recommend to to anyone that loves adventure. The beginning was a little bit slow but towards the end I was on the edge of my seat reading on to see what was going to happen next. It definitely had a spunk of adventure!!!

We read this book while on our trip to Florida. We too went canoeing in the marsh lands and saw several alligators and crocodiles close enough to make me fervently pray for my children's canoes not to tip over. It was the book that help me fall asleep at night after I received the call that my mother passed away in Mexico. This book was well written with enough detail to make it feel as if we were sharing the adventure, it had great information about the back waters and islands and the flora and [...]
audiobookStory: B-, Narration: ANot a review, just some thoughts for personal reference. Spoilers. Some spellings may be off since I listened rather than read.Jack Hawkins lives with his parents in Atlanta, but is staying with his Uncle Hemp (sp?) in the Okefenokee Swamp (as he often does) while his parents are on an extended trip to Europe. The uncle lives a basic life, something like you could imagine from a century ago, and that suits Jack just fine. He loves the flora and fauna of the swamp, [...]
Reread of an old favorite: WHAT A BOOK. The description is stunning and I genuinely have learned a lot of my survival knowledge from this book. At first, it may feel like it is slow, but believe you me, it picks up. It's such a good book (it made my mother cry a good way).
This is a wonderful tale with so much of nature interwoven into it. The writing is definitely for a younger audience, and for boys, so I am not exactly the target audience. However, it if packed full of adventure and such a love for nature and all things natural. I enjoyed reading it.
Whenever possible Christi and I read fiction set in the same place we are about to visit on a vacation or a trip. It's a way to get a foretaste of the environment we're about to explore. So in anticipation of our trip to the Okefenokee Swap last week, I read Tree Castle Island aloud to Christi. It was a good choice. Jean Craighead George has written a novel that immerses the reader in the details of the natural environment of the Okefenokee through the lens of a boy named Jack. Jack has acquired [...]
I read three Castle Island by Jean Craighead George. This book was about a boy that was very independent and was visiting his uncle that lives in a swamp. His uncle left him home one day and said he would be back in a week or longer. Jack the boy went out and took his canoe he built to test is and see if it floated. It did, then he went out into the swamp further than he had every gone look for a mystical island that your life would be nice and easy it's even said that fish jump into your boat t [...]
Jack is out in the swamp when stuff gets pretty fishy. There's a abandoned raft with a freshly gutted fish on it, a mama bear sitting dead under a tree, and the mysterouis calls of leeri leeri leeri ooobummm leeri. Is this the work of a swamp poltergeist? Or something much more?~Sami C. Jack Hawkins is a 12 year old boy who loves the outdoors. One day Jack goes out on the Okefenokee wit his trusty canoe, L'tle Possum. Jack ends up getting shipwrecked on a "haunted" island where he finds a dead b [...]

He finds a baby alligator and names him trouble. In the swamp he finds a fresh bear corpse and skins it eats the meat of it. He starts to establish a house and has to reloca [...]
The only reason I didn't give this book five stars is because I'm reserving that fifth star for my absolute favorite books. This really was a great book, though with a nice mix of nature-exploration, mystery, as well as the self and family exploration of the main character. My nine year old is devouring it right now:-) Also, if George is inventing her facts about nature, she sure has me fooled. I really get the sense I'm reading someone who knows what she's talking about when I read a Jean Craig [...]
Really good book for people who like the outdoors and adventure books. The genre of this book is adventure and mystery. It's about a kid who goes out int o the wild with his dog and canoe. The dominent impression is he's running away for his family because of problems in his house. The peope who would read this book is people who love to read adventure novals. This is a great book to read if you like to go into the wilderness. This book is kind of confussing in the beginning by the middle of the [...]
Tree Castle IslandWhen I finished this book I was surprised and happy. When i started reading it I thought it was going to be very boring and all about narrative and non interesting but it is really good I'm happy I read it!SummaryThis book is about a young boy who goes on an adventure to an island. he meets a young boy that looks just like him later in the book. Think they are twins but no really much. They spend all of there time together on the island searching food and playing with their wild [...]
Fourteen year old Jack Hawkins is stranded on an island in Okefenokee Swamp after his canoe is damaged. Like Robinson Crusoe, he is never really challenged to survive. When Jack meets Jake, who appears to be his twin, he begins to wonder about his own past. The story continues to move slowly with the reader hoping things will move more swiftly to the end. It never happens. It continues to plod along until finally an explanation is uncovered.
This was my first Jean Craighead George book although my son has read a few of them - we read this one together. It's the story of Jack a kid from Atlanta who is visiting his Uncle in the Okefenokee swamp in the summer and is on his own in a canoe he made. This one of George's later novels and while it was interesting and certainly her description of the swamp are vivid I can't say that this was a great novel. My son liked it well enough though.
Although this book is in the youth section of a bookstore I discovered it to be very enjoyable as were all other of the Craighead-George books I have read. Each is like taking a minicouse in natural science - so much information is presented and woven into the story of the fictional characters that you digest the textbook type material without even realizing it.I got started reading her books in an effor to find reading material that would appeal to my teenage grandchildren.
Decidedly not my favorite of George's novels. There were some lovely descriptions of nature, and Dizzy the Airedale, but boys are hard characters to connect with, and the nature of the bear's death really turned my stomach. So much so that when I found I owned a copy, I couldn't throw it in the giveaway bag fast enough.
Nice adventure story for kids. Young Jack spends lot of time alone on the Okefenokee Swamp and is very good at fending for himself, living off the land, fishing, etc. This is also one of those classic “twin” stories where Jack runs into his lookalike, Jake and they find they were separated at birth.
The tree castle island is literally the best book that I have ever read. I would recommend this to all of my friends. The tree castle island shows that you can do anything with teamwork. It also shows you that you are what you do not expect. This book was just a great book to read, but it is not super long.
Again, another good boy book. Takes place in the Okefenokee swamp. An adventure of a young boy who navigates the swamp system and his explorations. He finds and unlikely friend and learns more about himself than he thought possible. An unlikely twist at the end.
I'm not a huge fan of Jean Craighead George's writing style, but in Julie of the Wolves and My Side of the Mountain, the rest of the story and characterization were good enough for me to get past it. Not so in this one. It just wasn't quite up to par.
Jack Hawkins sets out on a solo adventure in L’tle Possum for the Okefenokee Swamp. Besides the usual Snakes and Gators, Jack wrestles with double vision and swamp poltergeist. The author is one of my favorites and this nature exploration story will be added to my library.
We listened to this one in the car. I have really enjoyed the books by this author (My favorite is My Side of the Mountain!). It is fun to learn so much about nature and how to live in the wilderness. I liked the unexpected "twist" this book had at the end ;-)
My sister-in-law read this to her kids while we were on our way to the Okefenokee swamp. We all loved it! It was fun to read. It also had lots of great info about the swamp that we enjoyed learning as we became intrigued by the mystery.
It was a great book.
The story was crafted pretty well and the facts were not drilled but it still felt as if i was getting a lesson more than enjoying a story.
A wonderful touching story. A perfect book for middle school readers.
young adult/kids book, but all about a grand adventure
A classic, living in nature and finding your twin, the twins were a little too much alike, not an impressive plot, dragged on in the middle portions
Picked this up because I loved Julie of the Wolves as a child. Really enjoyed this bookI love when kids have adventures on their own.
