I loved this book. Lucas was one unique (for me) hero. He is a bonafide dandy, but very much a man. That was odd for me at first. I haven't read as many Georgians, so the spiffied up, lace-bedecked, bewigged, powered, high-heel wearing hero was a different thing for me. But this man makes it look good. And he's got this long, black hair. (Fanning myself). Okay back to the review: He is rather ruthless, but at the same time, is a good husband for tormented Anna. He makes mistakes but manages to l [...]

Written November 3, 20153 Stars - Nice but never fabA historical romance by Mary Balogh can never be completely wrong. Not for me anyway. Or? A good feeling when I started this 14 hrs audiobook narrated by Rosalyn Landor (a genre favorite) but I'm must admit this wasn't one of Balogh's better. Felt a bit corny and got a bit both longish and boring to be honest. No, Heartless wasn't more than just good enough for me.I LIKE - good pro narrators

2.5 starsThe book wasn't boring, Mary Balogh is a good storyteller, I even managed to warm up to the hero in the second half of the book but Anna? Probably the worst heroine. Ever.*Update 1/1/14*There are many ways for a book to go wrong and this one did in almost every one of them. Even though this is practically my first Mary Balogh book (apart from a novella of hers I've read and loved), I can see this writer has talent and I will try more of her books but this one didn't work for me. I liked [...]

Can Mary Balogh do no wrong? This is another GREAT book by this talented author. I'll give you a quick synopsis, and then tell you all the reasons why I think it's great! Heartless tells the story of Lucas Kendrick, the Duke of Harndon and Anna Marlowe. Both are very wounded from their pasts and believe love is not in the cards for them. Anna believes that she is tainted and unworthy, Lucas has been burned once and has vowed never to be vulnerable againrtunately for him, this is a romance novel! [...]

I'm always pleased to see more of Mary Balogh's back list coming out in Kindle editions -- the latest being her Georgian series from the mid-1990s. Since the Rosalyn Landor audio version is also available, I chose to listen rather than read.My ratings: 3.5 stars for the story; 5 stars for the narration. The love story is beautiful -- classic Mary Balogh -- especially Lucas's gradual realization that he really isn't "heartless" after all. Anna's Big Secret, however, was dragged out too long, altho [...]

Wow, I found this to be an annoying read. The majority of Balogh books I've read have fallen somewhere between "quite good" and "outstanding" on my personal bookometer, so this was really unusual for me and for this author. Premise: in Georgian England, Anna - 25, nearly-a-spinster, the primary emotional and logistical support of her younger siblings since the death of their parents - goes to London with her younger sister at the behest of a godmother. Anna meets Lucas, Duke of something or othe [...]

A long, long time ago, when I started reading romance, Heartless was one of the first Mary Balogh books that I read. I loved it! I loved Luke who, despite feeling betrayed, always treated his wife with respect and kindness.Anna Marlowe is spending a season in London with her godmother and her sister. Orphaned she tried to keep her family together and to pay her father's debts so as not to burden her brother. Lucas Kendrick is back in London after spending several years in Paris in a self appoint [...]

I've given this an A for narration and a B+ for content at AudioGals. It’s been a treat, over the last few months, to see some of Mary Balogh’s older titles finally making it into audio format. I have noticed a number of them (including this one, and its sequel, Silent Melody) coming back into print and being made available digitally, so I’m hoping that the audiobooks will follow – and will add my voice to those longing for re-issues of Ms Balogh’s Simply series (also narrated by Rosaly [...]

Lucas Kendrick, Duke of Harndon, powdered and bejeweled-manages at the same time to be sexy, desirable and tres masculine.Anna Marlowe marries Lucas Kendrick, Duke of Harndon, knowing that he will never love her, to escape from a man from her past.Luke and Anna must learn to trust in each other or risk any chance they may have for a happy future.DNF 70% Heartless is slow and boring. That's all I can say about the novel.

4.5 starsIt is one of the best book I liked to read that was written by Mary Balogh. Though, it was not an easy read, it includes some suspense with a serious issue and it built tension and made story more excited for me.I think, Ms. Balogh did an excellent job creating and developing an affection between a cold man and an insecure, yet lovely woman. There was not a thing felt like it was rushed or unbelievable. I liked to read hero's transformation from cold man to compassionate brother, father [...]

This book started off so good, but then it got bogged down in the middle and was long winded towards the end. The hero was very unique. He was a dandy through and through. I loved that about him. There was nothing I really loved about the heroine though. She was just TSTL and I couldn't help feeling frustrated with her throughout the book for enabling the villain to use her the way he did while she continued to lie to her husband. The hero was a duke so you would think that there would have been [...]

This started out so promising with a damaged, overly urbane hero and a strong heroine with a spine. 4 star rakish hero who has good reason to be bitter and “heartless” but still grows into a living and honorable man in spite of himself. He reminds me of an Elizabeth Hoyt hero. Anyone remember the hero who wore red heels? Unfortunately, I also ended up saddled with what I thought was a strong and likable heroine who revealed herself to be one of the more stupid heroines I’ve encountered.Set [...]

I really liked the characters of Anna and Luke, but sadly I called a DNF at 54% because the angsty pasts and their stupid issues and inability to trust/ communicate with each other just became too dragging for me. It's definitely a case of me not the book though, the writing was actually pretty good and if you like these sorts of things then please don't put this aside just because I didn't like it.

Maybe 3.75 starsI’m a bit torn with how to review this story because I found Luke to be a great hero to read. He had his moments in the beginning when it was hard to love him because he was so cold and bitter, but he made a complete 180 for me in the end. Anna however – hmmwell, I gave her the benefit of the doubt in the beginning, then I disliked her as the story developed, then I was annoyed and frustrated by her, and by the end I found her to be TSTL. Well, maybe not that harsh, but I hat [...]

I really liked this book, especially the hero, Luke. He was such a dandy. Admittedly I read more Regency or medieval romance than Georgian, but I love the period. Those big skirts with the hoops underneath and the wigs and powdered hair and the cosmetics and patches. It makes me want to go to a masquerade ball. Luke is definitely the most stylish hero I’ve come across in all of my historical romance reading. He was described as beautiful but masculine with dark, nearly waist-length hair and, s [...]

AMAZING! One of the best books I've ever read and I recommend it! I don't want to give away anything, but this book has many layers. Even tho the hero dresses and acts "funny" in the beginning, don't be put off. This is a must read. I think I will read it again next week! It really shows how much we all need love in our life, even if we've been burnt. Forgiveness is possible and necessary and even if we make mistakes, it's never to late to say I'm sorry. Sometimes someone we love dies and then i [...]

A hero who wears cosmetics, wigs, heels and patches? And he's not very tall? What the hell? When I picture historical romance heroes in my head, they usually look like Sam Heughan, Aidan Turner or Matthew McFadyen. What was I in for?And this book is one of the examples of why I adore all of Ms. Balogh's booksher heroes aren't run of the mill. She's had a virgin, one without an arm, and now one who sounds like he looks effeminate. But my goodness, he's not.Ms. Balogh, would you please re-release [...]

Excellent read! Review to come.

Everything comes down to trust, whether it is present or absent, it matters.I was delighted after a long search to find and finally read the story of Luke and Anna, Duke and Duchess of Harnden. I had inadvertently read its sequel “Silent Melody” first and after seeing many high recommendations, was keenly interested to read their story. I have not read many stories set in the mid seventeen hundreds, but was struck again by the period. It would seems to me that all the wigs and powder and hoo [...]

Heartless is a historical romance novel set in Georgian times and centered around Lucaws Kendrick, Duke of Harndon, and the pretty-much-on-the-shelf Lady Anna Marlowe. Lucas has returned to London after being banished to Paris nearly 10 years ago, where he cultivated himself into a sophisticated gentleman. Sent away after he hurt his older brother in a duel, Luke has cut himself off from emotional attachment but realizes that in order to successfully take the reins of the family estate and guide [...]

I loved this book and I gave it 5*'s! This book has a great mystery and a nice slow developing romance between the heroine and her husband. It has angst too. I felt the emotion just come off the page.Anna has been the duty bound daughter to her father, and sister to her siblings. Her mother dies and the father falls apart and drinks himself into a mess. He dies leaving a giant debt. Then comes a man who offers to pay the debt and help the family and Anna Anna's Godmother and Luke's uncle are plo [...]

One of things I absolutely love about Balogh is her ability to make you see the appeal in a character you normally wouldn't. Physically speaking, she goes out of her way to make her heroes and heroines normal. They aren't all beautiful. Sometimes the men are short. Sometimes the women are plain. And yet, after only a few pages you find yourself falling madly in love with the "not-Fabio-perfect" hero and the "plain-jane-spinster" heroine. But don't get me wrong!!! The hero in Heartless is NOT ugl [...]

I've read this one before, probably have the physical copy over on my keeper shelf. But the library had the e-book available, my danged memory didn't recall the reading, so I grabbed it. Good, solid, well-written (duh, it's Mary Balogh) book. A great example of what historical romance can and (my not-so-humble opinion) should be. Not the instalove crap that's so prevalent these days, modern romance in a historical setting. Now I'm going to have to go searching for the rest of the series. *eyes k [...]

I think it's fine. I don't mind the slow pace since you could see the change in the characters. I didn't fall for the characters. They were just alright for me. One thing that seemed weird to me were the sex scenes. It was too often and too repetitive. I didn't feel like they added much to the story. The thing I disliked the most was the time it took to figure out how two-faced Henrietta was. It was just exasperating because it seemed like Luke and Anna never communicated. Henrietta took advanta [...]

Lucas and Anna are now officially one of my favorite Balogh couples!

Romanul cunoscutei scriitoare Mary Balogh a aparut in limba romana sub titlul " Inima de piatra" la editura Litera in colectia " Carti romantice".

Trigger warning (view spoiler)[rape/forcible penetration in the past, alluded to and later described with moderate detail. (hide spoiler)]This book had an interesting plot and the time period was not one I was used to but motivations fell apart in the end and I'm not sure it really worked for me personally. I keep getting sucked into Balog books by plot/circumstances bit then am ultimately frustrated by her writing style. This book involved less skimming than others but still wasn't my favorite. [...]

I love Mary Balogh, she is one of my all-time favorite authors, and in all fairness, almost all my friends loved this one. But every now and then I come across a book of hers that I find so over the top, eye-roll inducing dramatic that I just want to reach into the book and slap some sense into the people involved. Sadly, this happened with Heartless. It started out innocently and interesting enough. Lucas and Anna meet, flirt, and decide fairly early on that a marriage of convenience will suit [...]

I’ve read this book before and just had to buy it for my audio collection and am so very glad I did. Naturally, when you combine the amazing writing of Mary Balogh with the perfection of Ms. Rosalyn Landor’s performance you can will experience complete and utter enjoyment.Lucas Kendrick, banished years ago by his family understood that a heart was something that could be broke. Betrayed by his elder brother, rejected by his fiancee, banished by his father and shunned by his mother Lucas fled [...]
