More reviews at Mrs. ReaderPantsREVIEW: Let's just say I didn't love it or hate it. On the plus-side, upper-elementary and middle school readers will probably eat this book up. Wendy Mass is ever-popular in my library, as are fairy-tale retellings. Mature content is nearly non-existent; I am comfortable recommending Beauty to readers of any age who are able to read it.I also love the way Beauty's and Riley's families take their unfortunate circumstances in stride. Both families deal with some se [...]
Not much I could say about this book one way or the other, as it didn't stir a favourable reaction exactly.
This was a very interesting version of Beauty & the Beast! Alternately told by both the Beast and the Beauty, to goes very fast because you want to know what happens next to one or the other - but you have to read two chapters to get to it. What I liked most was that we get to know Beauty & Beast before they know each other. In fact, most of the book is leading up to the story that we know. This before time is especially interesting in the case of the Beast. The Beast is named Riley and li [...]
Very cute. Very refreshing. I haven't read many fairytale retellings recently, but I very much enjoyed this one. It was fresh and original. It had adventure and wonderful characters. It was sweet and romantic, but not overkill. I stayed up slightly later just to finish this one. Cute cover too. The colors are pretty. I'm very glad with the direction Wendy Mass took the story in. Everything tied in nicely in the end. Nothing left undone really, which is how I like my happily ever afters. Would de [...]
This book was so good! I loved how the author added to the story, while still staying true to the original tale. Wendy Mass's books just keep getting better, and better.
A unique retelling of Beauty and the Beast for middle graders. While keeping much of the original story intact, this one adds its own creative flair and backstory for both Beauty and her Beast.Don't let the poor choice of cover design fool you into thinking this is a modern retelling. This is set in Once Upon a Time land, firmly in fantasy territory. As in the original, Beauty is a merchant's daughter whose family has fallen on hard times. She's only thirteen, but I didn't have a problem with th [...]
This book was amazing! I loved how the author put her own spin on the tale. It isn't one of those standard prince-saves-princess type of book. In the book, the princess is the heroine. And these characters are so realistic! The girl, Beauty, is insecure but brave. And Prince Riley is such an adorable dork!Beauty has always been insecure when people have brought up the subject of her name. She isn't one of those glamour girls, and she loves to read. Then after a misfortune, she meets a boy named [...]
I liked this book a lot. I think it took a long time for Beauty and the Beast to actually meet.
Not bad, but it did take a while before Riley and Beauty's paths crossed.
In the book Beauty and the Beast: the Only one who Didn't run Away by Wendy Mass was an extraordinary twist on the original story of Beauty and the Beast. In the beginning of the book a girl with the name of Beauty's house burns down and her family is left to leave their home town, and move to a small hut in the outside of their town. Meanwhile a prince named Riley, gets turned into a beast by an old witch. Beauty and the Beast meets later in the story and they fall in love like all original Dis [...]
My middle-schooler loved this book so much that it was recommended to me.I have to confess that I had a hard time getting "into" this story. I have a hard time with stories that I already know the ending of. I never watched "Titanic," either, since we all know what happened to it. I told my husband that I couldn't seem to concentrate on this book any more than I could concentrate on watching football. I can concentrate on other things, which most people would call trickier - but princess stories [...]
Like they say "Tale as old as time"! This book takes the classic fairy tale beauty and the beast and twists it in a extremely creative way. The book alternates between the individual story of beauty and the story of the beast until the two characters cross lines and meet. The author does a brilliant job in placing the classic tale's main events in a modern setting with modern day problems. The story really shows you how sometimes your problems may lead you to happiness because both of their prob [...]
I haven't read #1 or #2 in this series yet, but it doesn't seem to make a difference that I can tell. This is a different take on Beauty & the Beast than I have ever read before (and I have read several variations of the story). I like it as much as any version I've read. I was surprised though, at how late in the book it is that Beauty & "Beast" actually meet. My only concern/complaint is that the cover doesn't "fit." It shows a picture of a girl in a contemporary party dress, yet the s [...]
Strange and wonderful. This is not like any retelling of Beauty and the Beast I've ever read and I have read a lot of them. Beauty is twelve. The beast is thirteen. There two quests, a tale within a tale and a number of delightful characters, including one called Handsome. I enjoy everything Wendy Maas writes this was no exception.
I was uncomfortable with this story despite the fact that Beauty and the Beast is my favorite fairy tale and despite my love for the story Beauty: A Retelling of the Story of Beauty and the Beast. This was a book provided by the district but I was uncomfortable with a 12- to 13- year old longing for marriage. I realize this is my modern sensibilities but there I am.I liked the prince although I never found out a bunch about him. I liked the dual perspective. It was just that age thing.
Not what I was expecting. Very much for young teen readers who are looking for adventure with just a light touch of romance near the end. The pace of the book is quick, with events happening one after another. Beauty and Riley are interesting characters in their own right, and spend relatively little of the book together. The rest of the time they are too busy.
MehImagine the classic Beauty and the Beast tale, except the first 70% of the book is random backstory. Also, Beauty and the Beast are both 13. This seemed like a book for middle schoolers.
1.75 Stars. Listen, I know I'm not the target audience, but honestly - HONESTLY, it was bad.
seemed to drag on
Love Wendy Mass, but was really disappointed by this book.
Favorite Fairy tale!!
One of my favorite books I've ever read. The characters take you on this journey I love it
I would have liked it more if they had been older but I have to consider the target audience. I thought the story was clever and I enjoyed the backstory that was added to both characters.
Very interesting twist to Beauty and the Beast and so much detail!
So I've read all the books in the trilogy and this one is the best. The first book was really boring, but it was ok, the second book was better, more interesting. But the third book is my favorite!
very fun to read
More tween than teen or young adult. It was a fun story, but it took a long time to get Beauty and the Beast to even meet!
Melihat judulnya, apa lagi yang bisa kita bayangkan selain cerita klasik Beauty and The Beast.
It was slow to start, and there were a few things I could have lived without in the beginning, her brief experience working to soften the wool for one, but it turned out to be surprisingly cute. It was a higher reading level than I expected, so although the events of the story are appropriate for younger readers, it's better for those who are slightly more advanced readers. Weaker readers may also be confused by the alternating viewpoints. There were a few things that bugged me, such as the misus [...]
