I am a tertiary member of The Network. I followed Charlotte's story from the beginning. Although I never had a chance to meet Charlotte in person, her amazing grace and charm reached across the pixels and affected everyone who knew her. My fellow Mommy friends invited me to follow Charlotte's story and I was always touched by the honesty, humor and eloquence with which Roger and Rachel chronicled Charlotte's story on her Caring Bridge site. This book is no different. Rachel's writing style makes [...]
Lived it. I've also read the book in its several draft forms. I might read it once more in published form just to say that I did. It's a true, well-written, gut wrenching story about a parent's worst fear being realized yet there's humor and laughter as well.
I have the privilege to work with Rachel & Roger Reynolds. I unfortunately never met Charlotte, though I followed her story through CaringBridge and watched her memorial service remotely. Even then, so far removed, I felt her impact on my life & our community. In "Four Seasons for Charlotte" I was allowed a peek into Rachel's innermost thoughts about her family's tragic experience and was able to get to know Charlotte even better. This book is incredibly honest, sometimes necessarily blu [...]
I got to write a blurb for the book jacket:"Four Seasons For Charlotte is an honest portrayal of a parent’s love and loss. Rachel Reynolds is, sometimes all at once, sad, gracious, jealous and angry at the how and why her 4-year-old daughter died from cancer. If you or anyone you love have suffered the loss of a child or are walking through a chronic condition with your child, this book’s frank look at the myriad of moments, responses and emotions will help everyone understand your “new no [...]
In The Happiness Project, Gretchen Rubin commits to reading books that make her more appreciative of ordinary life. This is one of those books. Even through tears, you're happy that there are people like Rachel, Roger and Charlotte and even happier that they have been part of your life.
Rachel's book is amazing! I instantly connected on so many levels. My first encounter with the beautiful "special something" that was inside of Charlotte was so dear to me. I brought my daughter, much younger at the time but still older than Charlotte, into R & R. Although my daughter is significantly delayed, Charlotte never batted an eye. She almost instantly grabbed her hand and began playing with her. It was like two souls connected and like Charlotte "knew" my daughter was special, but [...]
This had to be one of the hardest books I have ever had to read. Reading about cancer is hard enough, but when you combine cancer and a cute, little girl, it is time for some serious water works. And it certainly was. The book reads very easily, but it is extremely emotional. The author shares her story with honesty and clarity. She celebrates the story of her daughter's life, and in so doing, she shares tips with others to help during a time like this no matter what side you are on. I was const [...]
Everything happens for a reason. In times when the blessings seem to be abundant, it seems to be a mantra of the because-i-deserve-it fashion. In times of hardship, it's a phrase we tell everyone we never really believed. After reading Four Seasons for Charlotte, I think it's clear that Charlotte happened for a reason. Though her time on earth with the Reynolds family was way too short by any human standards, it transformed their family in great ways. Roger and Rachel got to become parents. They [...]
This was such a heartbreaking story. It's about a three-year-old who is diagnosed with brain cancer and it ends up being fatal. Rachel Reynolds, her mother, has written a wonderful book that helps walk parents through what it is like to deal with this. Not just the diagnosis and the emotions, but actually navigating the medical system, from treatments to hostpital visits and dealing with friends and family. As a mother of two, I couldn't imagine having to go through that, watching your baby die [...]
You might expect the memoir of a woman whose preschooler died of cancer to be an endlessly painful read. But the story of the last year of Charlotte’s sweet life contains so much more than grief. The author and her husband handled their beautiful daughter’s final year on earth with remarkable grace and honesty—even humor, in a circumstance that would seem to have no room for it. (Prepare to explain to onlookers why you are laughing out loud at a book that has the words PEDIATRIC CANCER on [...]
