Their first kiss at 12, formed an unbreakable and sweet love, that grows deeper as Caleb and Nico mature. Unable to keep apart but afraid of the consequences, Caleb and Nico must hide their relationship, or risk losing the precious bond they've formed. They battle against those out to hurt thembut sometimes life forces you to experience the pain, before the healing can b [...]

4.5--Coming of Age--Stars!!What a beautiful, emotional, heart-breaking and inspiring love story. I could never love anyone else but you."Caleb who grew up with a supportive, loving family but was afraid to come out to them.Nico who grew up with an abusive father, and could never come out to them. I was kind of left speechless after I finished this novella late last night- or I should say early this morning. I picked it up thinking I'd read a chapter but ended up finishing it one sitting. I fell in love with Caleb and Nico. This is a wonderful friends to lovers story that deals with some heavy topics- physical abuse and we also read their relationship grow from a friendship to a romantic and sexual one. I felt that the author handled both topics perfectly. Much like in his other book, Omor [...]

What a beautiful story!! I love “coming of age” and I love friends falling in love! Caleb and Nico have been best friends since they were 10 years old and Nico came over for swimming lessons. They’ve been inseparable ever since. Their relationship evolves into kissing and youthful experimentation at 12. And by 18, they are madly in love. Caleb feels very protective of “his Nico” and will do anything to keep him safe. They just have to make it a few more months until they are off to col [...]

Awwwwww I loved this story. It was sweet and just gave me a lovely gooey warm feeling inside. Massive big up to the author and publisher for not holding back on the underage sex. There was nothing that could be deemed sordid about the sexual relationship the boys have in this story - it shows the totally believable progression of a loving relationship between two boys who just happen to be 'underage.'My only disappointment is that the author doesn't seem to have any more books out yet, although [...]

Safe is a really cute short story by C. Kennedy. The couple in this story were just so adorable and I wanted to hug both of them so many times. I'm a sucker for boys who loose their virginity together, so this was the perfect story for me in that sense. Highly recommend it for fans of YA and like cute little stories.

ETAI re read the new edition of this one, and while the story is the same its a much cleaner version. It's still too short for me, but the story reads better. Still needed the tissues even knowing how it ended. Although this is a YA, I would so love to read Caleb and Nico at college. Or better yet a few more years down the line. Did their High school sweetheart status carry them through or did things change once they left home?Overall this is well suited to the YA audience, or anyone looking for [...]

Read 01/03/2014, 05/12/2015The blurb really does say it all. It's a very sweet love story, peppered with the sadness from the abuse Nico suffers at the hands of his father.Ultimately, I would have given this five stars, except the end is a bit abrupt and I was left wanting much, much more.

I think this is definitely a 5-star YA novella as it deals with some fairly edgy material without going over the top which I believe is appropriate for the target audience. The story was nicely written and executed very well. Like a lot of folks, I would have liked for it to have been a bit longer, but I think the story was conveyed nicely even given the short length. I thought the handling of the physical abuse was realistic given that most children who suffer this type of abuse at the hand of [...]

3.5, I rounded up.I read this novella for an interview I was conducting with the author. As far as my opinion I liked it. I thought the structure of the story was well done. (I am a structure person.) I liked the way Cody went back in time after the bruising and then brought it up to real time again. I think that style of "flashback" was well done. And the resolution of the story was good. So, yeah, I liked it. The abuse in the story was well done and realistic, I think. My niggles I had some pro [...]

A definite must read and keeper!O've been reading such great reviews of this book and have had it on my to read list for some time now but seem to keep passing on it. Boy was I stupid! This book was so beautifully written. I easily fell in love with Caleb and Nico from the start. C.Kennedy's style of writing is purely a work of art and makes the fiction believable.A belated "great job" to C. I've always secretly admired friends who've been coupled since, like, birth. So it’s no surprise that an m/m story along those lines appeals to me like warm chocolate cake with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. YUM. YUM. Caleb and Nico have been best buddies since they had swimming lessons together at age 10, and they discovered pretty early on that they only had eyes for each other. How sweet, and later sexy, is that? They got to work through and share so many experiences together. I mean, imagin [...]

It is then followed by n truly amazing exploration of two boys growing up together in every sense of the word.It is incredible to see how new author C. Kennedy takes the reader through all phases of the lives of main characters Caleb and Nico. Safe captures young love in a queer teen's life very accurately. The world really does seem to vanish so all that is left is this sanctuary where you and your lover is all that exists. It is this a place where it does not matter what other people know or what they think about it. But then there is the fear of this paradise being infiltrated by those uninvited, along with the potential damage they can cause during that visit. This novella both justifies these fears and manages to also extinguish [...]

In lieu of writing reviews – I’m taking an extended break – I decided to leave this list showing some of the reasons for the stars I’ve given to the stories I’ve read. 5 Stars – Given to stories that had me falling in love with the characters or stories where I hated the characters but the author had me hooked. For stories that had me so engaged in the plot I couldn’t put the book down and stories that either made me cry buckets and/or laugh until I cried. 4 Stars– Given to stori [...]

Safe is the second book I have read by C.Kennedy. It involves two young men, Nico and Caleb, who have been friends since they were ten years old and that friendship develops over time into more. They are unable to be open about their relationship because Nico's father would never understand. Nico's father is abusive to him and his mother and he and Caleb are just waiting until they graduate to go away to college. This short story is both sweet in it's portrayal of the love that grows between Nic [...]

Caleb and Nico stole my heart so quickly. I love, love, love friends-turned-more stories, and this one was incredibly lovely. Things happened so naturally between them, and their love was so pure and beautiful right from the beginning. The moments when they are 'coming out' to each other, and discovering that they do, in fact, feel the same way about each other, and share their first kiss are so beautifully written. You feel so in the moment with these two; it's wonderful. The abuse that Nico su [...]

I just love a story about best friends falling in loveCaleb and Nico have been best friends since they met when they were only 10. I loved the book, but the writing seemed a bit awkward. I felt like I was on the outside of the story being told the sequence of events, rather than being inside a character's head and feeling his emotions as he lived it. BUT, this doesn't take away too much from the impact of the story itself. The boys were engaging enough that I did feel a connection and I wanted good things to happen for both Nico and Caleb. Overall, I enjoyed it and I'm looking forward to more books by this author.

It's good, but the way it's written is a bit confusing. It starts in media res, backtracks a bit, continues to the "present" point, then continues beyond. It was good-ish, I think. Certainly an interesting read.

Caleb is the athletic, popular captain of the high school swim team. Nicolo, his perennial side-kick is sort of popular by default. What folks don't know is that Caleb and Nicolo are very much in love and have been since they were twelve. This novella is very much a book about current times. When the boys are outed by a spontaneous kiss, the students are generally pretty accepting; but their older, more traditional parents, particularly Nico's conservative and physically abusive father, is anoth [...]

This was a challenge book suggested for me because I am not normally a YA reader. Has nothing to do with anything that I've read before, but more with my own personal preferences and my comfort level of reading about young love and first times. I know it is the beautiful and natural progression of stepping out of innocence and into young adulthood, but it is not normally for me. So with that said, read this knowing that it is not the kind of story I would choose and make your own decisions on wh [...]
