David Foster has a peculiar leprosy - critical and readerly invisibility. His work polarises, and sometimes bamboozles. He'll follow an idea obsessively, switch styles in pursuit, link books in different registers, and is cursed with a moving pen - too prolific and quixotic. He's the Miles Franklin winner you've never read - hence his inclusion in my "wanker" category - a writer you might reference if you want to establish your credentials. Some enchanting features but generally gets lost in its own conceit.
Is this the worst book I've ever read?Yes.I don't know how it landed on my bookshelf but it it somehow. I have no idea what this book is trying to achieve, all I know is that it achieves nothing. It is a shamble of folk tales set in Ireland many years ago when Christianity was trying to settle while dealing with Ogres, Leprechauns and Fairies. It is told in a crude way where the main character ends up for some reason eating his own body fluid and excrement. Why? No idea.Stay clear !
