When it comes to The Great War, I tend to enjoy the vintage titles rather than the newer historical fiction that uses it as a backdrop with some mandatory cameos by the military brass. Sure, some of the first-hand accounts - such as Scanlon's - lack finesse and polish, but it puts the reader right in the boots of the soldier risking his neck on the front line. By the end of this, I had a no-frills picture of what the average soldier had to endure day after day, whether it was a blow-by-blow fire [...]
The author served during WWI as a Marine in 3/6, 4th Brigade, 2nd Division AEF in all the major battles Belleau Wood, Soissons, Saint-Mihiel and Blanc Mont to the wars end, as a corporal rising to acting sergeant.Written in first person in 1929 just 10 years after the troops came home it is listed as a novel possibly in that time period for legal purposes.
