An invaluable resource for any doing research on Ojibwe children and culture in the 19th and early 20th century. Ms. Hilger's details are very clinical, without judgement (no culture is perfect), even as there is a sadness over fading traditions and knowledge. My lingering disappointment wasn't about Ms. Hilger's book, but what pre-history culture (before European contact) will never be known.
