This was fabulous!Although this is an 'academy' style book, it is definitely a bit different with a wild set of very creative monsters. The characters are well defined and fill out their parts to their fullest extent. There is, of course, the cool girls, who are appropriately witchy and bitchy. The sexy to-die-for guy is as sexy as. There isn't a daggy, submissive bunch but the main character is certainly the full-on misfit. As with many people who have survived a difficult time at school trying [...]

(Source: I received a digital copy of this book for free on a read-to-review basis. Thanks to Cheree Smith, Dark Cherry Press, and Netgalley.)Teenager Scarlet (Scar) is always getting into trouble and getting into fights, but she’s more than a little distressed when she finds herself attacking her best friend and drinking her blood!Drugged and kidnapped, Scar awakes to find herself in unfamiliar territory, and finally finds out why she has been taken – she’s a dhampire – half vampire.Sca [...]

**I was provided a free copy via Net Galley in exchange for an honest review.Scar knows she is different but she doesn't realize the full extent until she wakes up at Haven. It's a school for Vampires, Witches, and Werewolves. She finds out she is a dampire which is half vampire, half human. While in the special school she trains to control her powers and turns to an underground fight club. This book was tough for me. I read the first 40% in one sitting but after that it was a painful chore to re [...]

I received a free copy of the book from the author for my honest opinion.Scar is a Dahampir which is a half- vampire/half-human. Her family has hid this from her; her whole life. But then Scar starts going through the change earlier than anyone thought she would. When the change came upon her, Scar had no idea what was going on. She almost kills her best friend Alex and puts her in the hospital. Scar is taken away to a place where there are other people or should i say creatures? (well I don't e [...]

A detailed review of this novel can be found on my blog.I rated this one warty because it's nothing but brutal fighting for no reason and I could not for the life of me discover any rhyme or reason to it. It felt a bit weird when I began this because I was reading another novel in tandem with this one, which featured a character called Cinder, while this one had a character called Scarlett! lol!Scarlett is evidently a vampire but of course she doesn’t know it. She liked to hang with her friend [...]

Assuming that Shadow Embraced is the first volume in a series that continues the plot throughout all (or more) volumes, I can say that: (1) I liked this first volume, (2) I have high expectations, even demands from the next (or more) and (3) Haven has chances to become one of the best and/or interesting (contradiction in terms? hmmm I don’t think so) series.I liked that the author did not hide in the sand and did not touch too much that "idyllic" side of the supernatural. Yes, we have a speci [...]

Scarlet (Scar) is a teenager that is bound to fight the battles her best friend, Alex, starts. It's okay though, because Scar doesn't mind fighting ~ until her last battle almost kills her best friend. Why on earth did Scar just go for Alex's jugular and who is this crazy woman trying to pull them apart? When Scarlet wakes up in a nasty cabin, caged in like a wild animal, the only thing she wants is to escape and go home. This is not, however, an option and she ends up in a Rehabilitation/Reform [...]

Teenager Scar(short for Scarlet) is having difficulties. After attacking her best friend and drinking her blood, she learns she is a dhamphir, an abomination from a human vampire pairing. She is whisked away to a school for teen supernaturals, where no one can know what she really is. While at school she joins an underground fight league. One by one the members go missing and all the signs point to her. This book fell very flat for me. It sounded interesting when I first picked it up, but I quick [...]

Shadow Embraced is the first installment in Cheree Smith’s “Haven” series. It introduces readers to Scarlet Devena—Scar to those around her—a teenager with a penchant for fighting, whose world is suddenly turned upside down, inside out, and a whole host of other clichés (luckily, the clichés end there), when she’s abducted and sent to a reform/finishing school for supernatural creatures.Suddenly, Scar is besieged on all sides by those who don’t trust her, those who fear her, thos [...]

So you start with meeting Scarlet, who is constantly bailing her best friend out of trouble. Except this time, Scarlet has definitely bitten off more than she can chew, because he actions bring her to the attention of some powerfully scary people. Plus, it seems like everyone really is out to get Scarlet. Plus, I don’t like Scarlet. I know that sounds bad as she is the main character, but literally, I kept expecting her to get better and she didn’t. Seriously, grow up a little. You have a cr [...]

I received Shadow Embraced in return for an honest review as part of the tour hosted by Dark World Books. Scar had no idea she was different granted she has heightened senses but they don't come without a price. Scar heads out one night with her best friend Alex who happens to start stuff with another girl leaving Scar to clean up typically with her first. However when a day at the arcade turns bad leaving Alex injured and Scar kidnapped everything changes.Suddenly Scar isn't the human she thoug [...]

Shadow Embraced really surprised me, I didn't think I would jump into the whole thing with that intensity. Naturally, I was attracted by the paranormal elements in the blurb and mostly the underground fight club filled with werewolves, vampires and don't know what else! The blurb was interesting, yes, but the main story was even more appealing. Scar (Scarlet) isn't just the typical tormented vampire, she's a fighter and a really good one. But all this power and strength is coming with a price an [...]

A school for vampires, werewolves and witches? With a secret fight club, a heroine who's considered a freak even among the undead and a killer on the loose? You can't really go wrong with a plot and setting like this. There's a lot to like about this story, and even though I had a few issues with some of the elements, it kept me intrigued until the last page and the writing style is unobtrusively competent. The pace of the book is frenetic, which I felt worked well to a certain extent. So many YA [...]

This review was originally posted on my blog, Darkest Sins. This wasn't the first time I read "Shadow Embraced". I did a Beta read for it a very long time ago, but I clearly remember how I was hoping to see the manuscript becoming a book sooner or later. Then, I re-read it before creating both cover and trailer for the book, of course. And now? Well, I wanted to read it again just for the pleasure of it, because I think Cheree Smith has created something different and boy, how fast and furious!Sc [...]

3.5 starsBack to good old vampires, werewolves and witches - diss it all you like, in my opinion you can't beat a bit of dark monster action now and again. After a spate of 'let's avoid vampires, they've been done to death so we're going to come up with a random new paranormal thing', returning to the old style freaks is like meeting up with an old friend you haven't seen for ages. Scarlet has attitude - a lot of it. She's a fighter, literally. Her dad's a cop but that doesn't stop her from gett [...]

The beginning started off with a bang, so that made me think that things were looking up, but ultimately I was disappointed. The characters were one dimensional and there was not much development to be had with them. I don’t even think Scarlett, our main character, made any major developments, that in reality, she n [...]

Shadow Embraced is definitely interesting. It reminded me of an edgier Hex Hall, I was also reminded of Vampire Academy, and I think it's because there are some similarities between Rose and Scar. They're both pretty tough and feisty. I think people who like both books may want to give Shadow Embraced a try. An underground fight club made up of vampires, werewolves and witches is unique, and I am curious about the Centurions and Ghost. There are a lot of fights (well, obviously) and there's a lo [...]

I will start with the good things first as there's only one. This book started off with a bang. The pacing was good and there was a lot of action. From there it went downhill. One of my biggest pet peeves in books is poor editing. I am wondering if an editor even skimmed through this book. The biggest thing was the improper usage of words. The author must not know how to properly use the term it's and its. Although this isn't per se a "big" word by precedent was used in place of precedence!!! Ver [...]

my thoughts – This book is a rather different take on the paranormal world of scary creatures. Scar is a teenage Dhampir. She is a mixed breed that is said to be an abomination of the creature world. There aren’t many Dhampirs alive that have not caused so much trouble they had to be put down. One day Scar is with her friend Alex skipping school in modern day real world. And the next she is being held captive in a town called Haven that is created solely for the purpose of protecting and te [...]

I felt so into the story, a different new world of danger at every turn. There's a lot of fight scenes in this book. A LOT. Personally, I didn't have a problem with that - I found it fast-paced and exciting, like watching an action movie. There's more action than substance, but as long as you're not expecting a deep, emotional story or a slushy romance, that's not a problem. Choose this book if you like vampires and you want entertainment. It's fast and frantic, with just a hint of a love intere [...]

Featured first at whitnage Today, I'm reviewing the YA book I received from Netgalley called Shadow Embraced by Cheree Smith. Shadow Embraced is the story of a young dhampir (half human/half vampire) named Scarlett with no idea of who or what she is, only that she loves to fight. After one fight too many she winds up at a hidden away school that is specifically for supernatural types. But Scar is the only dhampir, and finds out quickly that it's because dhampirs are notoriously unstable. Somethi [...]

Shadow Embraced is a kind of Harry Potter meets Twilight, and although there’s nothing really new here, in terms of story line, it’s still a great read – especially if you’re a Twilight fan. From a writer’s perspective the whole book is written first person present tense, which is really hard to maintain – so my hat is off to Cheree for doing this – keeping it present tense is a great way of cranking up the tension and keeping the reader in the moment. There were a few mistakes in t [...]

It is a pleasure to read an indie novel that is as well written and presented as Shadow Embraced. Scar, short for Scarlet, is a girl with a penchant for fights. She also has visions which she must draw out in her sketch book. Her parents ban her from seeing her best friend, but they skip school for one last chance to hang out together. It doesn’t go as planned and Scar attacks her friend. Only the intervention of a weird strange stops her, but she ends up in a terrifying place where witches, w [...]

This book really took me for a loop. When I saw that it is a YA vampire story, I have to admit, I assumed that it was going to be a fluffy paranormal romance where the vampires are broody and glittery. This is definitely not the case in Shadow Embraced. Vampires are once again the monsters that you hide from in the night. The best way that I could describe this book is a cross between Blade and Fight Club. I really enjoyed the added bad reputation that Scar had to endure due to being a Dhampir, h [...]

Scarlet likes to fight, when her parents ban her from seeing her friend she sneaks out with her and ends up attacking her. Next thing she knows, she's in some school for supernaturals - witches, werewolves & vampires. Each race doesn't really get on with the other so there is some segregation - except when it comes to a fight club type scenario. They are randomly told where and when their fight will be and will be punished if they're late. Scar discovers something else while she's in fight c [...]
