Great socio political sci-fi bookAgain Lisa Nowak delivers. I was originally drawn to her work though her YA car racing related books, and took the chance on this series because I like her writing style and the concept of the story. Great fun to read, and I am just about to go buy the next book. Hard to put it down.

A 3.5. Very short intro to a promising premise for a series.

Hurry up and waitIt took a long time for anything to happen after the events in the first couple of chapters. In fact, not much does.Cascadia has seceded from the USA. The Great Plains are a wasteland. People want to migrate to Cascadia, but are unable to because of strict population controls. But then people, mostly the poor and socially undesirable, start disappearing. It's said they are moving to California, but are they?Well, you won't find out in this book. You will have to read the next on [...]

Don't let the three-star rating fool you; this is a solid book concept. However, it's just the "first episode" of a much longer work and while I anticipate as a reader a lot of fun ahead, most of this first episode was simply spent setting up characters and establishing the world the story is set in.There are a couple interesting plot developments, but most of this episode is spent establishing things that (I expect) will pay off in Episode 1.2 and beyond. So while the writing is very solid and e [...]

I don't mind books being planned as a series, in fact I like to know there's going to be something to carry on with if I enjoy the book. However I hate when a few chapters that don't have a complete self-contained story that has some kind of ending are packaged as "Book 1" as in this case. Some of the concepts of the story are good but there's also gaping holes in the plot that completely turn me off looking for part two.

A good book for teenagers. I don't like books that are so obviously unfinished. I believe the author just wants to get people interested enough so they will buy the next books. I realized when I saw the 1.1 that the story would be continued but I hoped there would be some kind of an ending. No, it just abruptly stops.

NW native book to loveI had stopped leaving reviews when it became clear that the free teaser books were often badly edited with malapropisms, poor grammar, and formatting problems. Few tempted me to buy and read more. This series may prove the exception. The writing is clear and effective, the characters engaging, and the premise creative. Thanks for a great read Lisa Nowak.

I'll review the series as one, once I've finished 1.4. Not crazy about breaking a book into such small pieces, but I guess they got the money from me, so it works.

Love the concept! Also. being from Portland, it's all very familiar. Great read!
