First, I loved the author's first book, Beau, Lee, The Bomb, and Me. Although the author is still fine tuning her writing and POV of books, she tackles issues that children face growing up: bullying, finding oneself, connecting with family/friends, and learning how to make a simple difference in the life of someone who is struggling. The author relies a bit too much on the gimicky presentation and it can come across as forced. In this case, she had Rusty tell Beau's story in a paper written to he [...]

*Actual rating: 2.5 out 5 stars.*Once in a while, we stumble upon books that affect us so deeply we feel forever changed after closing the last pages. Then there are those that we abhor so much it's not funny. But every so often we come across ones that we feel indifferent to. Stories we don't have strong opinions for, for better or worse. The Hurt Patrol is such one cookie. One thing I like about this novel is how it depicts bullying as something that is not cool and that you can actually take [...]

3.5 stars for a contemporary teen 'coming out-ish' story. This book is told from the POV of Rusty, a girl helping her friend Beau run away. Mostly the book is Rusty recounting Beau's adventures. Beau is an out-gay teen, but the story he recounts is what happens just prior to coming out, and the brief aftermath.Beau has always been targeted by bullies. It doesn't help that the's a perpetual 'new kid' due to his family moving almost annually. His father is an abusive drunk who thought scouting wou [...]

So many of the questions I had when reading THE HURT PATROL where answered when I realized it was a companion novella to a book I hadn't read, set during that book. I honestly don't know how I manage to select this book for review without knowing that fact, but manage I did.Even knowing that, I think some aspects could be improved. The meat of THE HURT PATROL is layered between two frames. The outermost layer is that Rusty is writing this down as an essay for her teacher. The next layer is that [...]

READ THE ORIGINAL REVIEW ON MY BLOG: thebookaddictsblogI got this ebook from Netgalley in return of an honest review.I requested this book as soon as I read the word 'Scout' in the synopsis. I don't think I have ever read a book about Scouts, at least not one that sticks with you as much as this one does. From the very first page I was completely invested and in love with the characters. They felt so real to me, especially Beau, the main character whose story we follow. He is incredibly flawed an [...]

I was unable to finish this book. I don't dislike it, but it definitely wasn't for me. The concept sounded like it would make for an interesting story – a bunch of outcasts who are thrown together in a scout patrol – and so did the themes of the book (divorce, growing up, coming out, and being bullied). Unfortunately I didn't get far enough to find out. I made it 42% in and then I had to give up. The narrative just didn't speak to me at all.Beau's story is told from an outsider's POV, that o [...]

Honestly, I wanted to like this book. The theme of finding a way to deal with bullying is important, and the characters were interesting. It should be a great book, but I couldn't get past the structure. The story is told from the point of view of Rusty, who is relating the stories told by Beau about his time in Boy Scouts and about his parents and their divorce and so forth. It felt very thirdhand and disengaged most of the time, though there were moments when the stories felt more like flashba [...]

The Hurt Patrol is a really good book for any teen being bullied. Beau tells the story of his first years of high school as the new kid, once again. For as long as he can remember, Beau has been trying to please his dad. He has tried to 'man-up' and do all of the things his dad thinks a boy should do. Beau finally finds acceptance in the reject scout group known as the Hurt Patrol, and learns how to have and be a friend. There is a lot of cursing and use of the word 'fag'. The Hurt Patrol is the [...]
