Would be a fantastic nonfiction mentor text.

This book is informational nonfiction due to its large variety of interesting facts about animals that are generally considered "pests". I believe that this book would be best for upper elementary school students. It is a bit of a stretch, but I would pair this book with Holes by Louis Sacher. A fascinating -- if someone skincrawling -- look at a variety of different animals that people usually consider annoying or downright terrifying. Presenting both sides -- the benefits and downfalls of being around such creatures -- this book provides a balanced look look at the roles that animals play in society and challenges readers to rethink their opinions.

I definitely learned a few things from this book, but didn't change my mind about any of the animals. (Granted, I already considered a lot of them "friends," but nothing will ever make me like cockroaches, mosquitos, or spiders.)This could also be a great resource for showing someone how to take a position and support it.

I love this nonfiction picture book! It takes all of the animals that either scare us or gross us out and lays out the good and the bad facts about them. The humorous illustrations will make this a hugely popular book in my classroom library.

Engaging and fun informative animal book for Gr. 3-5.
