There's some interesting ideas in this book that kept me reading it although unfortunately it didn't quite follow through with them. The biggest example is the 'Jupiter Effect' which is the term for a psychological effect when astronauts fly to the outer planets (although earlier in the story a similar effect is described for those on long tours which doesn't make as much sense when you find out what is happening). Now I quite liked the idea of it and it's a key component throughout the story an [...]
In Ship of Storms, Ken Doggett has succeeded in creating a space opera that both spans the Solar System and offers a detailed view of life in a small rural community. There's politics and social observation at every level from interplanetary to village, and ideas aplenty, most notably the mysterious 'Jupiter Effect' which the story hinges on. Ship of Storms certainly doesn't lack for ambition, but for all that this is a story about the characters, mainly three or four people either caught up in [...]
This book was an unexpected pleasure. It was given away freely on and I didn't expect much, but I quite liked it. I actually wanted to give it 3.5 stars, but since you can only give whole star increments, I decided to bump him up because it was a book unlike any I had ever read. It was actually composed of many stories, involving the same character. It leaned toward hard science, which I prefer. At the same time he had some magic involved, but he made it clear that it was done with technology, [...]
Found this on my kindle from a few years ago. Ship of Storms is a decent read, a bit slow at times and the romance angle seemed forced. If you're going to attempt to insert romance into a story, I feel like you either need to be all in or cut it. I felt like the author put this in after the fact based on a recommendation. The Jupiter Effect plot thread was pretty cool, but it almost became an afterthought as the book went on. I would've liked to have seen it used more often and expanded upon. As [...]
3.5 starsA good solid space opera that manages the familiar tropes of the genre competently and with freshness. Really liked the character of Marcus and the slow reveal into how he operated was interesting. Werner was a good foil though not an especially engaging character. I found the female characters a tad unrealistic - unsure if that was a deliberate choice on the author's part as a reflection of how society had evolved. Some of the psychological aspects were interesting and there was a more [...]
The author has a real gift with names. Marcus Ramsey-Legend and (Obergeneral) Strom Volk are amazing names! This book has its flaws. The prologue didn't engage my interest. The book starts off very slowly. The narrative shies away from action scenes in places. It is sometimes vague, perhaps in an effort to create mystery, but this often distanced me as a reader from the story. The biggest flaw is that the flashbacks throughout the book overpower the main story. The main story becomes a series of [...]
Ship of Storms recounts the life of Marcus Ramsey-Legend during the brief war of independence between Earth and the Martian colonists. He ultimately encounters The Jupiter Effect, the insanity all who venture beyond Mars to the outer planets, encounter. Interspersed with this main theme is an extended series of flashbacks which fill in the details of Ramsey-Legend's life. The book is well-written and the character development is finely-crafted. In comparison to other SF colony independence stori [...]
