Steel & Lace is the perfect starting point if you are bored with the usual historical fare of highlanders and regency. It brings together a collection of writers who all write stories set in the 17th (and 18th) century. Not all are romance writers so there is something in here for everyone and it was pleasing to see that several of the writers have used the anthology as an opportunity to introduce shades of their characters who appear in their full length novels so we meet the Grahams in Ann [...]

There is no gimmick sell to this anthology and no reference to outlandish sex and courtly rakes, but all those wicked delights do exist in moderation. And if you’re a discerning lover of historical romances, then I suspect like me, period accuracy is as important to you as ever the romance, the sex, and the background scenery are. That is why this wonderful collection of novellas has taken rather longer to assess and review than anticipated. Steel & Lace is a good eclectic mix of biography [...]

I occasionally stray into genres that aren't my preferred ones, usually to widen my reading experience and learn a little more about writing different sort of stories. Historical romance is one of the areas that I have entirely avoided, until now. I've had a prejudice against it, worrying that there will be a pinkwash over the history from the rose-tinted spectacles of damsel heroine lusting after her bare chested highlander. There was none of that in Steel & Lace, all the history was spot o [...]

This was a very worthwhile read. A number of stories set in the civil war and later, which I found informative as well as compelling. I particularly enjoyed The Price of Convictions by Anna Belfrage, fascinated by the idea of a twentieth century woman settling for the rough life of the times she had apparently travelled to; and Si Tu Dois Partir by M L Logue, where two less physically fortunate people still managed to find a touching and meaningful love. Indeed, I enjoyed reading all the stories [...]

Some lovely short stories in this book, a lovely mix of traditional and unusual romances, and such a joy to read!

Nice quick reads. Particularly enjoyed the Chambermaid as it featured a certain Duke's Rebellion. Great for escapism (as well as helping a good cause)
