      An excellent theological treatise on the nature of witchcraft as a means to afflict the innocent. Mather's offers a well reasoned, for a Puritan, argument as to why it would be feasible for the Devil to have impersonated innocent persons in order to see them condemned for witchcraft. His guidance, as with that of his son, Cotton, would be largely unheard in 1692 as such would have meant the unthinkable breaking of ranks between the judiciary and the divines.
