-I Am George Washington is a biographical depiction of George Washington's life in a child-friendly way. The book is from George Washington's perspective, and he recounts his life from childhood all the way up to his time as the president. The story highlights some of the major aspects of Washington's life, such as his harsh winter at Valley Forge, his childhood and family make-up, and the American Revolution. This book falls into the biographical genre since it details George Washington's life, [...]
"I am George Washington" is a high quality, complex picture book in the Biography genre which takes the point of view of our nation's first president, George Washington. This comic book-esque little story allows the reader a look into President George Washington's life as well as his triumphs and lasting impact. The highly engaging pictures and dialogue of this book can lend themselves to most grades in Elementary school, but may be a great independent read for grades 2-4 and a guided or read al [...]
I am George Washington is a biography that I would use in the third grade. This biography went in depth about George Washington's life and included things that the general public would not know. I didn't know that he was home schooled by his brothers after his father passed away. Throughout the book it discussed what a good leader was and good characteristics of George Washington that ultimately led to him being voted president. I would use this book as an example for students to write an autobi [...]
4.50 This series is just adorable but it also has some great insight into history. I also love the inspiration the authors provide through historical figures like Washington. "Leadership isn't about being in charge. It's about taking care of those in your charge."
George's book begins with his early years, takes us through his military career, and includes the important events afterward when he voluntarily walked away from power to do his own thing. I liked that the author focused on the difficulty and pride of being the first person to do something. I found it inspiring and hope kids will, too!
I am currently building a program for Presidents Day and came across this one. It is a bit long for my age group, 3-5. It also highlights Washington's time in the military without much explanation as to how that was the main way to rise up in status. And also attacks biting ones nails, which, I do not do myself, but I am not about to tell a room full of children that not biting your nails is the most important thing out there.Personally, I am not a fan of Chistopher Eliopoulos' rip-off style of [...]
I didn't really like this book as much as the other books in this series but it was interesting to read about the life of George Washington. I'm fortunate to live in the only state named after him and I really didn't know much about him (other than the fabricated stories that are so popular, like the wooden teeth and the apple tree), so I did learn a lot about our First President. This is a great book to teach kids about history but adults should find it entertaining as well.

this book does a wonderful job giving us insight on George Washington while he was growing up. a look into his childhood and his life in the military and everything that leads him up to be the first president. This book does a great job for both children and adults. There were even things in the book that I didn't know about. This book would be great in any classroom. especially when learning about the first presidents.

My two year old is now obsessed with George Washington. I'd call that a win!
I really enjoyed this rudimentary biography of George Washington.
Loved this book . "Leadership doesn't come from Charisma or personality. It comes from Courage. The courage to do what's right. The courage to serve others. The courage to go first"
I read this with my 8 year old. We both loved it. It's a very informative title with lots of Washington factoids, but Meltzer manages to present it in a fun and accessible way. The length was just about right for a single sitting read. Loved the emphasis on leadership qualities. For first grade and above due to the length and subject.
"How Ordinary People Change the World" are the best books to inspire children. My 8 y.o. will sit down and read from cover to cover. I love that there are interesting facts thrown in to what we all think is truth. From the story line to the illustrations, your child will read these books over and over again.
My 4 year old absolutely loved this book on George Washington! It really stressed how GW was an ordinary and imperfect boy who grew up to do great things. Favorite line was about a great leader isn't someone who is in charge of people, but who leads and cares for those in his charge.

This series is starting to grow on me, maybe because I'm more deeply interested in George's bios than the other subjects in the series. And, with the election season upon us, this could be used as a read aloud to get students to think about qualities of leaders and therefore presidents.I do have an issue with showing young George as an old man. In" The Many Faces of George Washington : Remaking a Presidential Icon" by Carla Killough McClafferty, the issue of people today only thinking of Washing [...]
Brad Meltzer's Ordinary People Change the World series is a wonderful set of biographies. Our most recent addition is I Am George Washington. Like the others, there is a small caricature of Washington as a child who remains the same as the story goes along. The appealing format, fun illustrations and humor will draw readers in, and the wonderful writing and factual information will make it worthwhile. Love this series!
A strong addition to a series I absolutely love. This book definitely seemed more text heavy than the previous ones but readers will still enjoy learning about this great historical figure. A great starter to talk about makes a leader great.
I learned so many new things about George Washington! And now the kids want to visit Mount Vernon and the Natural Bridge. These books are really important.
What fun! Love the story and the illustrations in this series! Highly recommend them all!
