I love this book - and seeing my copy is signed by the author - I'll never give it away. The story is absolutely Australian and brilliantly written by a great Australian writer. I have seen this book in stores and watched people pass it by; and wondered why they haven't picked it up. I am reluctantly moving this to the unfinished pile. It is so sad, because I really, really wanted to love this book; I was excited about the location and the era, it sounded great. For the life of me I can't say why I didn't like it, I just found myself reading it slower and slower, reluctant to pick it up and all to eager to put it down and leave it until it gathered dust. Hopefully I will pick it up another time and it will be perfect time and I will read it through and love it. Hopefully.

A nice North Queensland setting, but the plot had more twists and turns than the Castle Hill road. I had a hard time connecting with the characters and understanding their motivations for these switchbacks.

Brilliant - so evocative of north Queensland. A must-read for every new north Queenslander to appreciate the rich history (and passion) of this place
