Tim Seibles is one of my favorite poets. His newest book is close to home; the book opens with two odes, one to his mother and one to his father. In the back of the book are family photos. He grapples with turning 59, aging, memory, death, and the decline of parents. In the title poem "One Turn Around the Sun" he writes: "I can't understand/Time how it makes us and makes us/disappear." His use of metaphor is always eloquent, his use of humor & critique of politics, especially in the four Vil [...]

I am a huge Tim Seibles fan, and I love this book more than the other two of his I've read, HAMMERLOCK and FAST ANIMAL. ONE TURN AROUND THE SUN is more like one life lived and what it all means. Seibles contemplates his relationship with his parents, (he includes photos of them) and other stages of his life. He is five years younger than I am, and so I also find myself looking back as these poems do. His combination of words is always fresh and astounding. On a personal note, he was the keynote [...]

His newest collection, One Turn Around the Sun, focuses on his relationship with his parents, and with the idea of aging in general; however, in true Seibles style, he is able to bring in other socio-political topics to the conversation, creating a stirring commentary on life in the United States. This book is one part Pablo Neruda, one part Issa, one part Sonia Sanchez, one part Robert Lowell, and the culmin [...]

One Turn Around The Sun is one of the best poetry books I've read in a while. I would've read it in one sitting if I didn't pace myself. Seibles' storytelling and surprising imagery makes this a beautiful tribute to his parents. I also love that he shares the photos of parents at the back of the collection.
