3.5 Stars. This is a very good debut novel from Morningstar Ashley. She’s tackled some mental health issues with her characters and portrayed them realistically. Following the developing relationship of 27 year old Alex and 40 year old Kelley, the impact of trauma on survivors is a primary focus. Taking on his sisters care has made Alex keep himself isolated and more lonely than he cares to admit. The path to a friendship and eventual relationship with Kelley is a slow process for a patient, u [...]
Letting Go is the debut novel from Morningstar Ashley and I can say she’s knocked it out of the park! This book deals with so much but the author doesn’t layer it on so you feel suffocated. It’s plotted perfectly and your emotions will be lit on fire. It’s not often I read a debut novel that takes my breath away but Letting Go did just that.Mental health is something we don’t talk about a lot. It’s a vast area and there are so many suffering. Alex lives with so much on his shoulders [...]
This is an impressive debut novel from Morningstar Ashley, solid and well plotted with believable characters acting in a wholly realistic manner. The subject of mental illness is dealt with compassionately but without blunting the edge of how difficult it can be to live with debilitating panic attacks. Alex is a frustrating character but never an unsympathetic one. He has had to deal with a lot and it shows in his every action.Kelley, by contrast, is solid as a rock, steady in his convictions and [...]
For a debut novel I give the author credit for coming out with such a strong message. The blurb sounded interesting so I had such high hopes for this. Unfortunately, I struggled to get through it. This story had great potential and I can see where the author was trying to go with it. For me, it just fell a little flat. There was no emotion. Alex went through so much emotionally and was still suffering and grieving but I didn't feel any of that. None of those emotions screamed at me. It didn't ju [...]
**4.5 Stars**He didn’t do anything inappropriate but his touch, whether it was the hand on his thigh or when he draped his arm across the couch and drew circles on the exposed skin of his neck with his fingertips, spread chill bumps across Alex’s skin making his skin feel alive and sensitive. It was all innocent, except to Alex’s body, because it felt like Kelley was playing him like an instrument. Tweaking and strumming and fine tuning it to hit every note in a song only Kelley knew.I hav [...]
A couple of things:1. Evie did NOT act or talk like an 8 year old. I have an 8 year old and I kept rolling my eyes at Evie. 2. Ben was a dick.3. Kelley sure did push a lot, after saying he wasn't going to.I really liked Alex. I thought his actions were pretty spot on and I'm glad he blew up a few times. I'm glad he was short and moody. It made it feel real. Is it bad that the only time I got teary eyed was when Alex and Ryan were in the rain?Overall, I felt like this was too long. If this was sh [...]
Cute cover!I was drawn to this book because I’m such a sucker for hot guys with kids. Single dad’s or in this case, single brother raising his eight-year-old sister. After losing his father to cancer a month before his sister was born and losing his mother in a car accident when his sister was just four, he’s dealing with a lot. Evie (his sister) has panic attacks and night terror’s and other residual problems from the accident, making it hard for Alex to do much else besides work and wo [...]
*~~*ARC kindly provided by the author to me in exchange for an honest review *~~*New authors are always a great opportunity to also extend my horizon and when I first heard about the book I was intrigued. I already "knew" who Morningstar Ashley was, saw her as an avid reader and participant in several groups in the gay romance community. When I had the chance to read the book I was really - pleasantly and positive - surprised by the good job she did with writing this book. Not only that it has a [...]
Letting Go is the debut novel for Morningstar Ashley and i've got to say for a debut this read really packs an emotional punch. I love the M/M Genre and thoroughly enjoyed this book. Letting Go pulled me in right from the start and kept me invested in their lives. It's a slow burn read but never felt like it was dragging. The story wasn't about the angst it was more about emotions, feelings and coping with life after loss. The author's writing with regards to the subject of mental illness was we [...]
[1.75 stars] the 1st half of the book was okay but i started to feel a little bored out at the 2nd half, was fading in & out of the book. book is slightly lengthy for a book that doesn't have much drama. may or may not continue the series.
Letting Go is Morningstar's debut book and she did a great job with it. I am a sucker for a good M/M read and she definitely delivers in that regard. I was sucked into the story in just the first few chapters. Part of the subject matter deals with mental illness and I thought the author did a great job of addressing it in a compassionate and educated way. I think we all know of someone who has dealt with a mental illness and the harshness of it. Alex has spent the past four years raising his you [...]
4 Stars!!! At 18-years-old, Alex made a promise to his father on his deathbed to take care of his mother and sister, and then later, when he lost his mother to a drunk driver, he took over complete responsibility for his little sister, who suffers from panic attacks and anxiety.Kelley is happy with his life but there's still something missing. Finding Alex again after so many years might be just what he needs. Kelley relentlessly pursues Alex, finally getting the chance to prove that they could [...]
Having had no preconceptions and knowing it's a debut novell jumped at the chance to discover a new M/M author, all l can say is, what l read totally blew me away.Expecting a light read with scope for development,l did not expect to find;such a strong sense of sibling love, protection, and devotion, such description of the fragility of the human heart and mind, and such in depth, insightful writing into each complex character.Alex and his sister Evie have had to face so much trauma and heartache i [...]
The character's in this book, Alex and Kelley, used to work together years ago. However, after Alex's mother and sister were in a car accident, and Alex was left as the sole caretaker for his much younger sister, he slowly sank into a world of anxiety, and while he did go out and about on occasion, his undiagnosed anxiety steadily rules his life, as well as his younger sister who also suffers from panic/anxiety attacks. While I do understand the pain and trauma Alex and his sister have suffere [...]
I loved this story! You wouldn't guess this is a debut novel. After reading the blurb, I thought I was prepared for facing the emotions reading this book entails, but boy was I wrong! I bawled my eyes out, laughed my ass off, cheered from the sides and have been touched by the way the author managed to create this story. (I also discovered that I couldn't read this book in my breaks at work unless I wanted my boss panicking with my reactions :)) )Morningstar portrayed such an amazing character wi [...]
I have never been so angry with a character in a book before. I absolutely hated Alex. As you an see from my progress notes. He was a complete dick to EVERYONE. He was always calling people assholes, asses, etc. And if somebody tried to offer help or insight or even just a shoulder to lean on it was because they had great big egos. I hated him. I said that I know, but I really hated him. The way he talked about and treated Ben, who was his best friend since childhood was appalling. And my poor, [...]
Heartbreaking beautiful Wow this is a great debut book from Morningstar! A unique dynamic with a very raw and harsh look at mental illness. Be prepared for some tears and a lot of angst. Amazingly complex and well developed characters. Evie, the little girl, will utterly capture your heart. Alex is so realistic. His emotions, or lack thereof, and living in denial are so frustrating but heartbreaking and faithfully true to character. Kelley is that perfect book boyfriend we all wish we could find [...]
This is the debut novel by Morningstar Ashley and I was given an ARC in exchange for an honest review.I enjoyed the story and connected with the characters in this book. The little girl, Evie, is quite the little adult who has been through a traumatic experience that has left her with night terrors and panic attacks. Her brother is her guardian who is so wrapped up in caring for Evie and keeping promises to his deceased father that he refuses to see that he is suffering and could benefit from so [...]
Great debut novelBoy, this book made me feel, which is exactly what you want to happen. I love Kelley's character, so sweet and happy. I would love to have someone like him mother hen me. Alex? Yeah, he was a first rate douche canoe at times. I really wanted to biff him upside his head. The level of detail and character building was spot on, and as someone who has panic attacks - well let's say it was perfectly written. Not everyone realizes that anger issues can occur in the midst of a panic at [...]
*3,5 stars*Very nice debut novel. The health issues were handled pretty good. So much that it came close to my own experience. I would've probably rated it higher had I enjoyed reading about that. I didn't particulary enjoy it. So not the book's fault but my own.The sex scenes felt very intimate and I really loved Kelley's patience with Alex. Alex wasn't ready for a lot of things and he needed to make his own choice for happiness. Kelley was there to support him.Hope Peter will be the next story [...]
Great Debut This is the first book by this author. We meet Alex and his sister Evie. Alex is raising Evie since their parents passed. He left his job and works from home. He devotes every minute of his life to Evie. One night his best friend gets him to go out and he runs into Kelley. They used to work together. Kelley tried to get Alex to go out with him but he won't do Kelley takes what Alex is willing to give. I enjoyed this book and all the interactions with the secondary characters. I cant [...]
I loved this book. In this book Alex is taking care of his little sister, who has some mental health issues due to car wreck she was in when she was younger. Alex has been hurt many times in his life and he doesn't want to open himself up to that again. In steps Kelley who Alex worked with a couple years back they start a relationship together. They have to work through a lot of issues including Alex's own mental health problems before they can get their HEA. This is Morningstar Ashleys debut no [...]
Congratulations Morningstar Ashley on your debut!! Amazing read by a new author!! I finished Letting Go in the wee of hours of the morning because I just could not put it down!! This is a beautiful, well written story. It is a broken boy love story, one of my favorite tropes, that is emotional as well as sweet and sexy with a wonderful HEA. I've read more books than I care, or I should say my husband would care to count, and I'm simply amazed that is a debut book. I'm looking forward to your fut [...]
GreatThis was a well written story. The main characters were strongly developed and likeable. Alex experienced significant emotionally losses early on in life and became solely responsible for his younger sister. In order to be front and center for her he locked down his emotions and blocked his grief. Eventually portions of those losses begin to bleed into his life resulting in panic attacks. Kelley wants to be there for Alex but he hits a roadblock at every turn. Kelley's patience was exactly [...]
Beautifully written with a storyline that will not only make your heart break but this will make you want to break something reading about Alex. I have never met a more stubborn character. I love his willpower and his love for his sister but when it comes to his personal life, he needs a huge wake up call. When Kelley enters the scene, Alex knows this is a do or die situation. Their relationship will survive if Alex will stop all his bantering. Excellent writing.
This is a debut novel from Morningstar Ashley and I'm a fan. This is an emotional story about loss, pain and rebuilding what you thought your life was going to be. I really enjoyed how both Alex and Kelley had a voice in this story. It brought a lot of depth the the characters and I was able to connect with them. The story may have started a little slow but more than made up for it. I can't wait to see what Morninstar has in store for us next!
Such a well written book. The author gives you a wonderful slow building romance between Kelley and Alex but also tells the story of Alex's and Evie's (his little sister) story. How they cope with the deep tragic loss of their mom in two different ways. I like how the author delves into how hard it is to realize and accept that sometime you need help from loved ones and Professional help. This is a must read.
Brilliant Debut. What a gorgeous story. Very emotional and incredible really given that this is a debut offering. The story is very heavy on the introspection which I found made the beginning drag just a little but you can't help but be sucked in, in search of the much needed happy ever after. I can't wait to see what this first time author has to offer next.
This is Morningstar's first book & she did an awesome job! I really enjoyed this book, it was tough in some parts & hard to read that I cried & my heart hurt, but I made it through the book & cried happy tears at the end. :) A Must Read!!
This is Morningstar's debut novel and I am in love. I adore her for jumping right out of the gate and inserting mental health as one of the main characters. You can see my full review here: christinasbookshelf/2017/0
