I picked this book up because I lived in Mali and am always curious to see how it is represented in fiction. Then I realized that I had met Cristina Kessler when she visited AIS-Bamako, where I taught. I had a hard time getting into the story both because of the amount of explication in the first chapters and because Aisha, the main character, struck me as a bit Mary Sue. Once the story got going, though, I enjoyed it.

This book is just terrible. I do not know how it won the Africana award. Terrible!
