This book is second in the 'Gemma' series for children, and starts the morning after the previous book closes. It follows the progress of the singing/dancing group 'Gemma and Sisters', featuring four cousins and one or two friends. The book also focuses on the family and their day to day life, as the parents raise their three very different children and provide a home for their niece Gemma. Lydia, the middle cousin, learns a difficult lesson in this book, and there are some quite moving sections [...]
The four Gemma books are an easy read, and effectively tell one longer story about Gemma's stay with the Robinsons. I know we're not supposed to like the Gemma books, because they are all modern; and my copies had the photo cover and the Betty Maxey illustrations, so they even looked a bit rubbishy. But I always liked the Robinson family, who lived in a fairly ordinary house like ours, and went to a comprehensive school like we did. Obviously we weren't as fabulously talented as the Robinsons an [...]
Another old favorite. Now they've formed the group, Gemma and Lydia are hoping for more performances, Gemma because she likes nothing more than being in front of an audience, and Lydia to dance in public. Only Ann would rather continue singing alone as she did in the past. But how to get gigs? Along comes Robin's friend Nigs with a plan! And Gemma & Sisters is off and running. Until disaster strikes . . . .The only flaw in this book is that there are two Christmases without a summer in betwe [...]
I have always loved Noel Streatfeild's books and as a child I got my library to ILL them for me or hunted through second hand book stores to find all of them. She tells the perfect "girls stories". I was always able to find one character in each book that was my favorite. They definitely stand up to re-reads.
Not as well loved as the Shoes books but, I've always loved Noel Streatfeild.
I didn't like this as much as Gemma or Gemma Alone, but it was still enjoyable.
Gemma and the Robinsons launch a successful singing and dancing group while balancing school, extracurricular activities, and family life. A nice second installment in the Gemma series.
