Finished in under a day! A much easier read than I was expecting (at least reading the English translation). Although, I have been told the trilogy gets more and more complex and experimental as it goes onI am reading this trilogy as suggested by my dissertation supervisor as a possible example for my topic (representations of illness and stigmatisation). Despite having loads of ideas for the Russian side, I need some examples from South Slavonic writers! I'm just not as well versed yet in the l [...]

Čitaću ga i dalje.

Danilo Kis is a true master of the written word in Serbo-Croatian. Having read the book in his native tongue, I found it extremely interesting to read. While most of the content had an autobiographical character, as much as the author has stated so. I was drawn to his seamless transitions, between dreaming and waking. Between being a toddler and a young adult. Between displaying incredible sadness and masking it all with the innocence of childhood.I dare say that the representation of that innoc [...]

One, wonderful, gorgeous, autobiography represented with metaphor. It represents a, cruel, sad(happy)-sad period, but happy and free child, on some way tragical, childhood of one imaginative child in war time.

Kis is a writer of intanst, obvious beauty. He writes with an effortlessly dreamlike, poetic style that is nonetheless grounded in the realities and objects of the world around him. He plays no tricks and his voice is clear, yet he does not explain or dictate to the reader meaning each new visitor to his stories will approach with new ideas and new images. Above all, Kis is a very natural writer, one that seems spontaneous and unplanned, yet complete in itself; it is very hard to find influences [...]

Slike detinjstva pričom otrgnute zaboravu."I nigde više šarenog vašara, nigde pelivana, nigde kikota majmuna i barikanja tromih slonova.

Desiree Andrews (Assistant Editor, Tin House magazine): Last week Lance, on his way to Powell’s, asked if anyone wanted anything. I gave him some money and two criteria: 1. Something under ten dollars. 2. Something I would like. He came back with two books Danilo Kiš’s Early Sorrows and Out by Natsuo Kirino. I started Early Sorrows immediately and was transfixed from the start. Taking into account my inclination toward all things Eastern European, I was bound to like this book. Told with sw [...]

Beautiful language, simple and very easy read. It's a collection of short stories of a kid. I guess it's perfect for children and young persons who start reading literature. I liked it but as an adult i m expecting more from a reading this period of my life. That's why i will read for sure in the next future the 2nd and 3rd part of his autobiographical trilogy, Garden Ashes and Hourglass which i guess they are more characteristic samples of Kis.
