Quite interesting. A new perspective and new pieces of information (although factually difficult to acertain). However, even for an Egyptian who grew on the governamental antimonarchy version of Farouk's life, this book did not change my mind. Actually, it added doubts about figures that I always considered patriotic, e.g. Nahas Pasha. Highly entertaining in yellow papers and gossip columns style.

Just had to find out more about Farouk! It's a lengthy reportage rather than literature but excellent on that criterion. Farouk was a living figure in my childhood and he turns out to be what I suspected: a link between the corrupt aristocracy of our time and the no-holds-barred, divine-right monarchies of the 19th century. A bonus was a peek into the culture of Cairo in the first half of the 20th century - cosmopolitan, decadent and zany. If the book was a tiny bit slimmer (and not chunky like [...]

A Kitty Kelley type book on the next to last King of Egypt. Mostly a book on the sexual, eating and partying habits of the king than any other aspect. The book makes the King look bad, the British worse and almost anyone connected to the King, friend or enemy ever worse. If there were ever a book to make the argument that Royalty are pure parasites, then this is one. I am sure that there has to be a book that shows the good side side of the King. This just shows the clown side.

Really entertaining writing, but factually all over the place. It has interesting ideas but I wouldn't use it as a primary source for anything.
