Developmental Social Neuroscience: A Special Issue of Social Neuroscience

This Special Issue showcases some of the latest and best research in an important emerging field, developmental social neuroscience, which is focused on the nature and development of the mechanisms involved in socially relevant human behavior Recent work on the neural correlates of empathy, prosocial and antisocial behavior, and inter personal communication, for example,This Special Issue showcases some of the latest and best research in an important emerging field, developmental social neuroscience, which is focused on the nature and development of the mechanisms involved in socially relevant human behavior Recent work on the neural correlates of empathy, prosocial and antisocial behavior, and inter personal communication, for example, is transforming our view of human development by revealing complex interactions among genes and environment, including culture, that are shaping brain and behavior throughout life This work, like research in social neuroscience generally, is also causing scientists to reassess longstanding assumptions about the meaning of constructs and false dichotomies such as cognition versus emotion, and behavior versus brain What emerges is a holistic view of human beings as dynamic, multidimensional phenomena that are simultaneously cognitive and emotional, behavioral and neural, social and individual, depending on how you approach the phenomena and how you measure them.A prominent feature of this new research is the use of multiple methods in order to make measurements at multiple levels of analysis What distinguishes the studies included here from other recent work in social neuroscience is the adoption of a developmental approach From a developmental perspective, human beings are viewed as dynamic organisms, continually in flux an effort is made to document the ontogenetic time series The hope is that a developmental approach will provide a comprehensive and hence, complete description of human social function namely, one that includes an understanding of the actual causal mechanisms by which this function emerges.

  • Home Developmental Social Neuroscience Laboratory In the DSN Lab, we study the developmental trajectories and neural correlates of self evaluation, perception and understanding of others, emotions, motivation, decision making, and self regulation. Center for Developmental Social Neuroscience Ruth Center for Developmental Social Neuroscience About our Center We study the neurobiological basis of human social relationships, focusing on the brain, hormonal, autonomic, genetic, molecular, and behavioral components that underpin our capacity to form and maintain affiliative bonds between mothers, fathers and their children, among couples, between friends, and within social groups. Research Developmental Social Neuroscience Laboratory What is Developmental Social Neuroscience Ideas about the self, perceptions and understanding of others, emotions, motivations, decision making, and self regulatory abilities dramatically differ between a child at age , a tween at age , and an adolescent at age . Developmental Social Neuroscience Max Planck Institute Therefore, another focus of our research is on the development of social behavior, a topic previously headed by Dr Nikolaus Steinbeis. Social neuroscience UNC DSN Lab Eva Telzer Welcome to the Developmental Social Neuroscience Lab Our lab seeks to understand the neural changes that support social, emotional, and cognitive development from childhood to adulthood We are interested in the neural mechanisms that are involved during decision making, social interactions, and emotion regulation, and how experience, culture, and the motivational context affect behavior and
